Food4Friends: Monday/Thursday

A group of volunteers from The Well and Serve the City have been making friends and meeting needs for the past three months at a refugee squat. The families are staying in a building near Place Stephanie and we will be visiting them this week to spread friendship, help with learning languages, and do children’s activities. STC soccer team
STC Brussels volunteer, Reinhard Drews, is looking for STC volunteers interested to meet weekly, on Sunday evenings (19h00) at the ACJ sports hall (152, Chaussée de Wavre, Ixelles) to play soccer together. Everyone willing to have fun and share a good sport spirit is welcome! To keep the Serve the City spirit up, young people of marginalized families and various backgrounds are encouraged to join. In 2012, we would like to keep some organization in the donations we receive. Therefore, we would need a few volunteers who would be willing to come to the office on a weekly basis to sort out in categories the various donations we receive. This would allow us to be more efficient and targetted towards those in needs and the asbls we help out. Additionally, we created a database (google doc) in which we list what types of items are most needed by asbls we cooperate with. Please feel free to check it out if you want to make a donation. Serve the City is forming a group meeting on Thursday or Friday mornings that will visit Thai women working in massage parlors. This Saturday, 21 January, was our Elderly Focus Day. It was a special day for three reasons : it kicked off the new year for Serve the City, it started the celebration of the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and we had the honour to serve alongside Prince Laurent and Princess Claire of Belgium. We would like to thank all the volunteers who came to this event as well as our various speakers. It was a great day, thanks to each and everyone of you! We danced, we laughed, we shared stories with the older members of our society. We built new friendships and closed this wonderful day with an afterparty at Rooster’s, a bar downtown. We hope to see you all again at our Homeless Focus Day, on the 18 February 2012. Save the date!

They organize Famisol Days on the weekends where volunteers can spend time with disabled children during various activities, including sports and arts. Famisol Days always last from 9h45 to 18h00. If you are interested in joining them, please note that you need to register in advance. This Saturday 28 January, they will be “snoezelen” in Zellik. Wanna know what this is? Contact Alison at alison@servethecity.be! She will also give you information on how to register.

The whole Serve the City team would like to give a big thank you to all the amazing volunteers who served with us and gave some of their time, love and energy to reach out to those in need during 2011. It has been a great year full of hope and progress for Serve the City and we owe it all to you! 2011 is the year where our committment to ‘cross the line’ got recognized officially when we were awarded the European Active Citizenship prize. We would also like to thank all the fantastic asbl’s we cooperate with and who work for social progress all around Brussels. Additionally, we are thankful that more and more companies get involved with us for teambuildings and sponsoring. We are looking forward for 2012, which we hope will be as fullfilling as 2011!

The Serve the City office will be closed from Friday, 16 December 2011 until Monday, 9 January 2012. We wish you happy holidays and are looking forward to serve together again in the new year! But some projects will go on during the holidays, such as Food4Friends. Give a hand to a blind person
Serve the City recently got informed about an Italian blind interpreter who is also suffering from a genetic disease that makes his bones extremely fragile. As you can imagine, any travel is a challenge for this man. He has to hire a taxi everytime he goes to work. We are looking for volunteers willing to make his life easier by driving him to work every once in a while. Also, as this man is blind, he could also use some help sometimes with accounting, etc. If you can help out, please contact Raluca at raluca_suvleacov@yahoo.com.

Wrap up some Christmas cheer!
On Plaisirs de Servir, a group of Plaisirs de Servir volunteers helped decorate Foyer Georges Motte, a homeless shelter for men near St. Catherine. The staff really appreciated the Christmas cheer we brought to the home and have invited us back on Thursday, 15 December from 10:00-12:00 to wrap around a hundred gifts for their residents. Please contact thisweek@servethecity.be to join this project. Additionally, Serve the City would like to make visiting Georges Motte a weekly serving opportunity to visit the men, playing sports and games and making friends. If you are interested in serving or being the project leader, please contact thisweek@servethecity.be.

Christmas Decorations
Some of the ASBLs in Brussels need your help with getting into the Christmas spirit! These three organizations have asked us to help put up their Christmas decorations: Maison de Repos- La Cerisaie, Harmonie Center, and Cosmos. Consider donating just a bit of your time to brighten up their centers.

• Decorating at Harmonie Center (Rue de l’Harmonie 1, 1000 Brussels) will take place on Wednesday, 14 December from 14:00-17:00 and needs 4 more volunteers.
• Decorating at Cosmos (Docter de Meersmanstraat 14, 1070 Brussels) will take place on Monday, 19 December from 10:00 to 12:00 and is in need of 6 volunteers.
